Risk of Steep Slope Erosion - Focused on the vulnerability of steep bare hills with weaker soils to erosion driven by heavy rainfall.

Degraded poor water quality, iron-rich and sediment laden, grazed agriculture and open access to banks, limited riparian trees, adjacent to wetlands in the Upper Catchment.

Riparian Planting – Unshaded streambanks erode and warm up. Native plants stabilise banks and filter runoff.

In-stream Erosion

Riverbanks and beds exposed to high flow events can lead to bank failure and scour, like in the image of a high-flow diversion channel.

Biodiversity Loss
Wetland drainage and river straightening have fragmented once-connected ecosystems. Tuna (eels) migrations are disrupted, and spawning grounds for native fish species have become isolated. Riparian zones that once cooled the water, sheltered birds and insects have thinned, limiting biodiversity.

Steep Slope Erosion

Steep slopes with limited vegetation or with heavy grazing can increase the risk of slips and erosion as shown in the image below where higher risk is within steep treeless gullies.

Erosion Control & Steep Slope Planting – Steep, exposed slopes lose soil quickly. Deep-rooted trees hold the ground and slow runoff.

Extensive floodplains, flooded agriculture, drained floodplains, native forest, steep hillsides, wide valley bottoms in the Lower Catchment.

Floodplain Connection & Wetland Restoration – Drained floodplains can’t hold water or support wildlife. Restored wetlands reduce flood risk and boost biodiversity.
